Trying to boot to/install Ubuntu - Help

Asked by tmarbury

I have burned the *.iso image to a disc & I have also burned the extracted files to another disc (I did both because the *.iso image didn't work). I am able to open the extracted files in Windows but that's not what I want - I want to install Ubuntu & I am unable to.

I have an IBM laptop running Windows XP with 504 MB of RAM. I've attempted to boot from each CD several times, changing the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the CD/DVD ROM drive. I never get anything but Windows.

What am I doing wrong?

How is that done? I'm using Nero to burn the images onto the CD. I have no idea how to make them "bootable".

What you did is wrong, you will not extract the iso image. Look at here:

OK - but on this page https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromCD it shows 2 images of what your burned CD should look like - one is right (lists files) and one is wrong (lists only the iso file).

How am I supposed to get the files to list that way without extracting them from the iso file?

When using nero choose buring image, NOT data disk.
If you use burn data cd, the image will only be copyed to the cd. (wrong)

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I had no idea I was doing that incorrectly. I've only copied data from one location to another using Nero & didn't know that was not right here.

Again, thank you - problem solved.
