Tracker doesn't work

Asked by Jim Hutchinson

Maybe I misunderstand what the Deskbar is supposed to do, but I thought if you entered a search string it would find files and such matching. However, when I enter in part of the name of a file in my home folder under actions it says "search for file names like..." When I click that a new window opens called Tracker and it just says your search didn't find anything. I have tried this several times and each time I get the "no hits" response. It doesn't even seem like it looks. It just opens and gives me that message.

What am I doing wrong? Does this need to be configured a certain way in order for it to work?

Thanks.

Do you have the Tracker Live Search extension active in Deskbar?

I am having the same problem. I have also tried finding files from the command line and that doesn't work.

Murat,

Thanks for the help. Yes, I have the deskbar tool and can click it and open up the search tool. I can insert a string and it will give me some choices for web or to search my computer. If I click to search the computer it opens a new window and tells me nothing was found - even though it didn't look like it even looked.

What I meant was: is "Tracker Live Search" activated in the "Searches" tab of the Deskbar preferences?

The following are not activated:

Tracker sometimes fails when terminated abruptly (power failures or forced shutdown). A workaround is to stop it and reindex everything. Try the instructions here:

Well, that may have been the issue. After a reboot it's working fine. Not sure why it quit working. Actually, I don't recall it ever working but then I don't use it much. The first time I tried it didn't work. I figured after all the drive activity to index everything it should have easily found what I was looking for. In any case it seems to be working so it must have been bad timing on my part.

Thanks.

Good to know it works. The upcoming release of Tracker is said to fix this issue.
