managing uninstall install of packages - how to revert an installation

Asked by Marco++

Hi all,
I'm running kubuntu7.10.

I think I have a package that conflicts with Wine.
If I run Wine with a clean installation I can use Wine (WorldOfWarcraft)
If I install all application I need(gimp, firefox, many "normal" applications), when I start wine(wow), it crash, freezing the computer.

I think can be a firefox library, shared with wine (libnss3), but I'm not sure.

- - - - MY QUESTION(s) IS(are) - - - -

How can I manage the install/uninstall of a package?
How can I investigate my problem?

I don't want just install/uninstall a package... And do the "autoremove"...
I want to understand what conflict with wine...
So it'snt a specific wine question...

I dont want to use stuff like time vault... I just want to understand what is wrong with wine.
Wine developpers replied me that wine(by definition) can't freeze the whole os.

I thank you very much and I wait some replies.

Thanks for the question.

1) You can remove packages by using your packages manager and mark them as remove or uninstall and then commit those changes the same way you install packages.

You can also do this by using the "remove" or "purge" options for apt-get in the commandline if you are familiar in using apt-get.

2) This is a very open question. Such investigation is often based on observing what has changed between when it worked and it doesn't. You could install your packages one-by-one and after each packages you could test wine if it still works. Alternative you could find out what is going on on your computer. Do you see your HD light lid while the computer is "freezing" this could mean that you have too many applications running at the same time and all are fighting for memory which creates a lot of "swapping". Can you check the cpu usages by having a performance monitoring tool open? This would give some more information. Finally, you can check the logs (/var/logs) if you see some information that explains some of the unwanted behaviour.

Unfortunately, there is no easy answer to this particular question. However, if you ask more specifically, we might be able to help you more concrete.

Hope this helps.

You can download WoW for linux... I think there is a special version for Linux and it's freely distributable...

I'm sorry but, nope, there is no(not yet) linux version. Thx Blizzard :-/
Yes it's downloadable.

I don't close the question, awaiting for further advices.

How to remove a program(package like firefox) that installing overwrite some libs? How to go back in time?

Thx you all,

Marco

You cannot go back in time. There is no "real reversion" of installs. What you can do is remove packages and all packages that depends on them will be also removed.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask Marco++ for more information if necessary.
