Adobe flash player will not work in Opera

Asked by Riverrun

Adobe Flash Player is causing a problem.
It started when I tried to install the latest version.
I tried Synaptic...no dice.

Clicking the Jigsaw piece in FF worked but only for FF.
FF is not my main browser, I don't want to go on but there is a huge memory leak in it and it keeps crashing.

I use Opera; it's faster, lighter and never crashes.
Adobe FP will not now work in Opera and it's a pain.

I tried the following:

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

sudo update-flashplug
Didn't work!

By then I suspected a bug and sure enough when I looked in Launchpad, I found that this is indeed the case.

Tried the following remedy by Cyrus Jones:

This is not your fault. This is a very recent bug, caused by Adobe's update of Flash 9.0 update 3 (9.0.115.0) codename "Moviestar" on December 4th.

http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pressroom/pressreleases/200712/120407adobemoviestar.html

This caused Ubuntu to not install the flash plugin, detecting a change in the flash plugin installer file (via MD5 checksums). See bug 173890. This bug has been fixed in the next release of Ubuntu (Hardy 8.04) and it should soon come as an update to Ubuntu 7.10.

If you want an immediate fix, do the following.

Using Synaptic Package Manager, remove the package flashplugin-nonfree. For more information on how to do this, see the Ubuntu documentation here: https://help.ubuntu.com/7.10/add-applications/C/advanced.html#synaptic

Alternatively, you can run this command in the Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal): sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-nonfree

Then just download this package (32-bit only) and install it (it is identical to the current package in the next release of Ubuntu, Hardy 8.04): http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10761023/flashplugin-nonfree_9.0.115.0ubuntu2_i386.deb

If you have 64-bit Ubuntu (not likely or recommended for a person new to Ubuntu), you currently need to build a binary package from this source package: http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree/9.0.115.0ubuntu2

Worked for FF but not for Opera.

Can anyone rid me of this of this aggravating problem.

How can I get Adobe FP working in Opera?

Would installing a .tar.gz file work?

If so how do I go about it?

The adobe site advises the following:

Click the "Download .tar.gz" link. A dialog box will appear asking you where to save the file.
Save the .tar.gz file to your desktop and wait for the file to download completely.
Unpackage the file. A directory called install_flash_player_9_linux will be created.
In terminal, navigate to this directory and type ./flashplayer-installer to run the installer. Click Enter. The installer will instruct you to shut down your browser(s).
Once the installation is complete, the plug-in will be installed in your Mozilla browser. To verify, launch Mozilla and choose Help > About Plug-ins from the browser menu.

I think it will only work for Mozilla browsers and besides, I found that I couldn't perform the following task: In terminal, navigate to this directory and type ./flashplayer-installer to run the installer. Click Enter. The installer will instruct you to shut down your browser(s).

How do I navigate to a file, any file in terminal? Beats me.

Any workarounds?

Ok, did some more research. Found out how to navigate in Terminal. Installed FP.rpm; Opera has stopped askking me to install FP but Youtube and other sites still won't work.

Try going to tools > preferences > advanced > content > enable plug-ins
If it's not checked, check it.
If it is, click on [plug-in options] and search for Shockwave Flash.
If you don't have it, you should reinstall it.

If reinstalling didn't fix it copy libflashplayer.so file into /usr/lib/opera/plugins/ directory. (this is manual install)
cp ~/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/opera/plugins/

good luck

Tried Forks suggestion...trying to open the plugin file made nautilus crash...everytime.

Solved my problem...sorta...Dloaded a beta version of opera (9.50 - 1709) and it works.

Ttied to install the tar.bz2 file. Way beyond me folks. Have the pre requisites, ie the builder packages but can't install.

Running Opera in terminal.

Good to have a nearly fully functional fave browser again.

Opera rocks.

Well, I finally found an Opera Deb Package for 9.50 (this evening) and all is well. FF is working, Flash is working and my favourite browser is fully functional again and I can launch this beta 1 from the toolbar. Working my way through this has increased my confidence that I can manage Linux fairly well, though I'm beginning to realise that Gutsy is far buggier than Feisty which I was came to know via Wubi. Maybe a return to Feisty is in order.

As a note, the new version of Flash is only compatible with 9.50 Beta 2 of Opera (and later).

Assuming flash works in Firefox, you must install Opera 9.50 Beta 2 or later. If you do not have flash working in Firefox, see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=636397

In the Home Page there is a row of 6 large, square icons at the top of the page, click on the dark blue one entitled 'Answers.'

This will take you to a page known as 'Questions and Answers.'

At the centre of the left-hand side of the page and under the title: 'Most Active Projects,' you will see a list of projects supported by Launchpad.

The first one is Ubuntu. Click on it and two thirds of the way up the next page on the right-hand side you will see a blue icon, clicking on it will bring you to the 'Ask a Question' page.

Enter a title for your question in the 'Summary' field and click continue.

You are likely to be presented with a repository of similar Q & A's to your own.

If none of these provide a solution, scroll down the page and you will see a large, blank space which will allow you to explain your query and post it on the main board.

Hope this helps.

I'm a relative noob myself and after 6 months, I feel really comfortable with Ubuntu, so much so that I have nuked windows and claimed the free space for Linux.

It's important to remain calm in the first few weeks; getting upset will affect your judgement.

Tell me, does Flash Player work in Firefox?

If you visit YouTube, can you watch a video in Firefox?

Do you remember how you installed the Flash plugin?

The official plugin that resides in Synaptic is broken and will not install at all.

There is a Deb package (think Windows .exe file, easy to install, floating around Ubuntu forums)

Sadly, it will NOT work with Opera 9.26!

It may work (probably will work) with Opera 9.50 which is a Beta and unstable.

A google will locate a Deb package for Opera 9.50.

*There is a Deb package (think Windows .exe file, easy to install, floating around Ubuntu forums) that will easily install a working version of Adobe Flash Player that will work with both Firefox and Opera 9.50 (BETA).

Being a Deb file, installing is a one click affair!

You need to uninstall the old version of Flash player before you install the deb.

Sorry for the late response.

The package that is floating around is on my post: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=636397

The package I built is available on that page (or in this URL): http://ubuntuforums.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=53648&d=1198033332

However, you must use Opera 9.50 Beta 2 or later for flash.

Download Opera 9.50 Beta here: http://www.opera.com/download/get.pl?id=30253
