black screen and arrow cursor after login on 12.04

Asked by Dolores Blocker on 2012-05-24

I don't have a clue what to do....I bought the live cd for 12.04 and 11.10, ( I sure would not give away the other 8 cd's to anyone, if this is what they will experience) I am using 9.04 because I can get on online to try to find out what to do for 12.04. I installed and I logged in once and updated all thru the software center and now all I get when I log in is a black screen with a arrow curser, which I can use to get into All Settings thru right click and change background window. Other than that I am lost, please help in step by step instructions, I do not know how to get to any of the things I have tried to read about...If I knew how to get information to give to you I would be glad to but......Thanks Dolores

Just to clarify, are you able to get through a full installation of Ubuntu 12.04?

What video chip do you use?
Does the system have a make and model?

yes, I did get thru the full installation, and thank you for replying. Where do I find the info you are asking for? I'm using 9.04 and can't seem to find where to get my system info and video chip manufacturer. Very little abilities to do anything with this basic distro....
