realplayer will not work for internet radio

Asked by suecapo

When i try to open a radio station to listen, other apps. open instead of realplayer, like serpentine. Before i upgraded my ubuntu recently, i didn't have this problem. Realplayer is installed. why won't it open automatically? Thanks for the help, I'm still very green.

This is a matter of application association. What are you opening them from? Firefox, or the desktop/file browsers or something other than these?

I'm not sure that I know what you mean, but I'll try to explain.
When I go to this radio web site and try to listen to their station on
line by clicking on their realplayer version, another app. opens like
serpentine or movie player and they won't let me listen. Before I
upgraded our ubuntu this wasn't a problem. Before realplayer would open
automatically on the web with firefox and it would play the station.
I hope this answers the question.
Thanks

Okay. Thats a good start. Now the radio streams you are clicking on, are they mp3's, pls's or rm/ra's or some other format/extension?

The web site is wwoz.com, a New Orleans radio station, and it is a MP3
Stream that i click on. When i click on it i get a download screen and
then an error message that says "no recording drive found on your
system therefore some of Serpentines functions will be disabled". Then
Serpentine opens but it doesn't play the station.
Hope that helps.

Hmm, okay that is interesting, serpentine is for burning CD's. Not really what you are interested in.

Its possible that the way forward is not via realplayer at all, but to consider one of the properly integrated linux players. All of them depend on ensuring your installation supports mp3's, which Ubuntu does not until you add some extras (due to rather annoying legal issues).

Have a read of this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats, and then choose a player. There is rythmbox, which is gnome integrated and is a little like iTunes, XMMS which is very similar to Winamp, and also amarok (my favourite) which although being a KDE app runs quite happily on my gnome desktop, and has everything AND the kitchen sink.

This stuff is all in synaptic.

Just took a look at the site. The stream is a PLS, which is a playlist file. Most players hsould handle it, XMMS may be the least pain..

OK, here's a couple of ways to do it, both of which I have just tested with that station just fine.

Method 1. Open Totem (Movie Player) which is installed as standard on Ubuntu. Also open a browser at the home page for that radio station. Click and drag the link to "Real/Winamp/iTunes" in the top right (which is http://wwoz-sc.streamguys.com/listen.pls ) and drop it on Totem. It will just play

Method 2. Open browser on that radio stations home page, right click the link "Real/Winamp/iTunes" as above and click "save link as" then choose "Desktop" and call the name something like "listen to wwoz-sc.pls". Then whenever you want to listen to it you right click and chose "Open With --> Movie player" or again, drag the file over an already running Totem.

Works here.

Well, i tried both ways and i get an error message in movie player that
says "do not have a decoder installed to handle this file. Might need to
install necessary plugins". i've recently installed amorok
and tried to play it thru that but did'nt work.
How do i see if i have the nec. plugins or get the ones i need?
Thanks

Ok, it's in MP3 format which Ubuntu doesn't ship support for out of the box because there are licence implications. The following page (already mentioned I see) details exactly how to get this working..

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

The top two sections should be all you need, enabling the "multiverse and universe" repositories and then "making things work in a hurry" should be all you need.

I know it looks like a lot to do but it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to actually do.

Thanks for your support! I finally got it to play with amorok. Totem
still had an error but i'll try to figure it out another time.
Just happy with this success!
