Dekstop problem after force quit

You probably now i've been having problems with my ubuntu after i installed it on my Dell Latitude D630, well i have a new problem. No it is not with the internet and it may be a graphic problem but this is why im here. You know what? Lets get down to what happened. Im on my bus to my house and my computer runs REALLY slow. I restart it and try openeing a file. The file open's but it dims out and stays like that. I force quit and then my desktop disipears!!!! I still have the top bar and tray on the side but my icons are gone! I have to go to my homefolder to get my files back and then they all have check marks beside them. This is never happened to me before. I am running the latest version of ubuntu (12.04). PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!

I believe that nautilus is still responsible for drawing the desktop and icons, even in 12.04. Please try the following command from the terminal

killall nautilus

Your desktop should "re-appear". As nautilus will instantly restart once its killed.

tried the killall nautilus and nothing happened..... im going to do a fresh reinstall of ubuntu 12.04 beacuse i've had problems for ever since i installed 11.10, Ill give it a try on sunday (tommorrow) and see what that does...
