no sound on Acer Aspire 1640Z

Hi:
My computer is a laptop Acer Aspire 1640Z with sound chip ALC883, and the sound card don't runs like Harpo Marx. I don't know what to do now. Ubuntu recognizes the card, but alsamixergui is unable to move the bars of the output.
Please, can you help me?
