Asked by Maggie

It worked at first but when I restarted the system after some adjustments requested a restart, the sound was no longer functioning after the restart.

The same thing had happened several times with 7.04, however, it didn't occur to me that it could be an ubuntu problem. I thought it was something with my (no-name) pc. It would work intermittently

I had a similar problem with mine with a fresh install of 7.10

Mine is a laptop so it may be a different problem but mine was cured by installing

alsa 1.015 ( Gutsy comes with alsa 1.014 )

Thank you for your reply. I'm very new to Linux and I don't know how to do that.

Can you tell me how to go about installing alsa 1.015?

this is a long standing problem of mine and im trying to fix it (my sound works sometimes, not always - plus i have a really old sound blaster live soundcard which prolly doesnt help)

1. apparently when u install things (ie tinkering), it can screw up ur sound card configuration.
read this especially the fresh kernel section.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting
NOTE THAT WEN U UNINSTALL THOSE SOUND PACKAGES, IT UNINSTALLS YOUR GDM! not sure why but u need to make sure u include it in the reinstall packages otherwise wen u restart ull restart in terminal mode.

also note that the site above is for ubuntu fiesty and and not ubuntu gutsy, so even more packages are accidentally removed (gdm, ubuntu-desktop etc). basically run sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils and whatever comes up as uninstalled make sure u include it in the install list (sudo apt-get install ...)

2. ive also read that installing esound in ubuntu gutsy fixes this problem. havent tried it:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=588708

search around the net and the ubuntu forums cause there is heaps of discussion on this topic.
