I NEED HELP, NO LOGIN SCREEN

Asked by vampire622003

System Specs:

P4 2.2GHz
1.5 GB RAM
36 GB Partition for Ubuntu
1.7 GB Swap File
ATI Radeon X1300 PCI

I have installed Ubuntu, and it gets past the Boot Up (Loading) Screen, then it goes black.
I can access my console thingy and login, not going to desktop, just my name with a $ sign. That's all I know what to do.
How do I fix it?
I have never used Ubuntu before, so I need help, please. Thanks

I also noticed when I login (using the command console thing), some type of error says something about "bcm43xx_microcode5.fw" not loading or failed.

That error keeps popping up, even while I'm trying things out. I tried the "startx" thing, no progress.......
This is really bothering me.

If you get the $ sign you are in console mode and Xserver has not started.

You can reconfigure Xserver from the $. Type: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This will start a text based wizard. Answer the questions you can. If there are questions you don't know the answer to then initially go with the given default answer.

If at first you don't succeed than try again with small changes. If all else fails then choose VESA as the video mode. VESA is lowest common denominator stuff and should give you some kind of gui.

(The server edition/install has NO gui!)

Can you help with this problem?
