install problem

trying to install with 128mb of memory,on compaq deskpro with pentium2,install go's through uncompressing the kernal,to unpacking the files,showing the window manager,gnome footprint,and natiulas icon in small ubuntu logo,then the screen goe's blank,cd-rom spins for hours,I can veiw the live cd through windows but can not install it through windows.tried useing the text interface with the commands noapic and nolapic nothing.Are there any commands to use,Is ubuntu seeing my hard drive?

Assuming you are booting off the live cd, this could be due to lack of memory I suspect. There is an alternate CD which allows you to install Ubuntu onto your hard disk without the live component. You can download the DVD image from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/dapper/release.1/ but I cant seem to find the CD image - assuming your pc only has a cdrom drive and not dvd..

Like previously mentioned I recommend you using Xubuntu, this is basically Ubuntu but aimed at users who have low end machines.

The problem seem to be too little ram in the computer, you can install ubuntu with the "alternate" cd, you can download from here:

http://ubuntu-releases.cs.umn.edu//6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso
