Hi Rusty,

If you boot from the DVD there is a menu option to check the DVD.

Here is a link with screenshots.

Hi maiatoday,

it is now a few days later - I did follow up on the link you sent me and at least that showed that the disk was internally OK. However I do not know how to go about to check the checksum and to make sure that it is externally OK. The link does not explain that. Hope I am making sense - the point is that the disk DVD which I have does have some kind of a problem - I wish I knew how to use the long checksum which I got somewhere.

I want to mention that the supplier has now agreed to give me a new DVD
Thanx Rusty

Rusty,

A file containing the same "long checksum" you have is also stored on the disk. The disk checking utility will check the disk and compare with the stored file. So I think what you call the internal and external checksums are the same thing, Howevere, if you make an .iso image of the disk, this .iso file can also be checked with a md5sum utility.

Here is a link on how to check the iso and get a md5sum on ubuntu and windows amongst others.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

This should enable you to get the "long checksum" you referred to. Also note there are links to the ubuntu pages publishing the md5sum sums for current installs which will ensure that you have the correct ones.

hope this helps
