7.10 installation - internet connection

Asked by Frank

Ubuntu 7.10 Wireless setup problems

I am new to Linux and have installed Ubuntu 7.10 on a new Packard Bell EasyNote notebook - this has a Wireless lan card.

I cannot get the wireless lan working at all -the Ubuntu "Using Windows Wireless Drivers" help says install ndisgtk using the Synaptic Package Manager - but ndisgtk does not appear in the package manager!

I am new to Linux, but worked on Unix for many years up to seven years ago, so am pretty rusty!

I have discovered that I need to connect and download software, drivers, etc, from "repositories". There was no mention of this in the Ubuntu installation procedure or in the ubuntu help.

I have only a USB modem and a wifi card (both carried over from Windows installations) - it is also necessary to download software to enable a USB modem in Ubuntu.

As I cannot connect to the Internet either by wifi or modem, because I need to download drivers from the internet to enable each of these devices, I think that this could be categorised as a Catch-22. Has no-one at Ubuntu considered this might cause a problem?

It certainly isn't easy to believe that Linux will ever threaten Microsoft.

I actually have thought of this exact situation and really...I dont know what to say. Most people do have a Ethernet port which can be used as a last resort, but it seems you cant. My only solution would be to download the package you need from another computer and transfer it via a flash drive and install it using dpkg command.

Can you help with this problem?
