Package linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-40-generic not available

Asked by John Rose

Package linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-40-generic not available in Lucid.

It's required when doing Sound Troubleshooting:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure

Any ideas where to find it?

Step 7 in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure says to use alsamixer. That gave:
john@JohnDesktop:~$ alsamixer
cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument

Gnome Alsamixer gave:
john@JohnDesktop:~$ gnome-alsamixer

(gnome-alsamixer:4407): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_instance_get_private: assertion `instance != NULL && instance->g_class != NULL' failed

(gnome-alsamixer:4407): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_type_instance_get_private: assertion `instance != NULL && instance->g_class != NULL' failed
Segmentation fault

AlsaMixerGUI gave a popup displaying:"Function snd_mixer_load filed: invalid argument".

The troubleshooting procedure does NOT ask you to use gnome-alsamixer.

It asks you to use alsamixer.

alsamixer works for everyone else, so either the alsa driver is not installed on your PC, or the alsa driver is not recognizing your sound card.

The error

"cannot load mixer controls: Invalid argument"

is related to your specific PC configuration and will not be an issue for most users.

It would be best to send us the full Terminal output from step 3 and step 4 in the procedure.

Mark,
If you had bothered to read my message, you would have seen that it stated that I had used alsamixer. How do you know that alsa mixer works for everyone else?
