firefox silently crashed!

Asked by Wladston Viana

I was doing an extensive research, and all of sudden, firefox crashed, taking with it all the open tabs of usefull information I took so long time to gather ....

It simply closed silenty - there wasn't even an screenshot of an error message I could take screenshot of...

I'm starting to get angry with that fox .... :( This is starting to look like the times when windows let you full of anger when it destroyed your work ... but even worst in this case now, I don't get even an error message!!!!

Anyone knows what can I do to prevent firefox from crashing randomly, taking all my time of research with it ?

You can install Firefox 2.0rc1. It can recovery from crashes keeping track of your work (opened tabs, text and so on).

If you still have problems, try to obtain a backtrace of the crash following the instruction listed here:https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingFirefox.

Ok, thanks Luca!

I'll wait for the 2.0 version to be released before I install it.

It did not look like a crash - suddenly the firefox windows dissapeated, as fast as a blink of the eye. I really have no idea of what caused the trash, since I was loading various pages when it happened.

Thanks very much! :)

A simpler way to get a clue about the error is to start firefox in a terminal window. Open the same tabs (they might be in your history -- Ctrl-H) and see if you can repeat the crash. The error message might be something as unhelpful as "segmentation fault" or it might be more informative. It's worth trying before installing a new (and unpackaged) version of firefox or recompiling so you can do a backtrace.

It is quite stable at the moment (I use it at work since 2.0beta). Anyway, Edgy will ship it, so it is just a matter of time :)

Okay! It's not the matter of it being instable or not - it's because the instalation of new programs on Ubuntu is not quite clear for me - the only way I know is the old visit-the-site-download-and-double-click-the-installer :)

I've a similar problem with some sites. I ran Firefox from console (to see the log) and I can find that come sites that use Flash 9 makes de flashplugin (7 is the lastest version for linux) crash and then crashes Firefox too.

Yes! I've even reported such bug to firefox team. Firefox seems to be getting more fragile ....

I don't think it's a Firefox bug but a Flash plugin matter. If you run in a site designed for Flash 9 while you still have Flash 7 plugin, in order to display it without worries you have to sit down waiting for an update from Adobe or trying its open-source replacement.
