Can I change Ext3 partitions to ReiserFS without losing the data?

Asked by javaboy

Hi,

I've got two Ext3 partitions on my computer. I'm really fed up with Ext3 and want to switch to ReiserFS. Is there any way to switch without losing data? Thanks in advance.

Hello. Thank you for your question.

No, as far as I know there is no possibility to change the filesystem. The only way to change the filesystem is to reformat the drive. But: Attention! All data stored on the drive will be lost so be sure to have it backed up.

If there's enough space you can copy the files from one partition to the second, reformat the first, copy all the stuff from partition 2 to partition 1, reformat the second partition and again splitt your data to both partitions.

Well, I guessed that i'l lose all the data stored on them. thats why I wanted a different way to switch to ReiserFS. I cant afford to lose my current installation of Ubuntu. And I dont have enough free space to copy files from one partition to the other :(

Hm. Maybe you can zip the files and swap them onto another medium, for example and external hdd?

Can you help with this problem?
