Non-free codecs
This package depends on the binaries codecs package matching your architecture (w32codecs for i386, w64codecs for amd64 and ppc-codecs for powerpc systems).
It can be safely removed.

This means, that the package "non-free-codecs" is a meta-package. It depends on the suitable package for your architecture. This is to make it easier for scripts or programs that want to install non-free codecs without messing around with your architecture.

The package it depends on ("w32codecs" if you use the i386-version) is not "free" (the license is too restricted) and therefore not part of the official Ubuntu package repository. It is for example provided by the additional medibuntu repository: http://medibuntu.org/packages.php If you want to install packages from the medibuntu project, take a closer look at this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
