how to stop start up music?

when i log in to my computer theres a music when the computer startsup ,some times i want to work on my computer at night and and i do not want to wake my roommate.
how do i stop it from playing? (without disabling sound)

Please open the menu System->Preferences->sound
and select no sound for

- log out
- log in
