playing other audio/video formats? wheres the packages?

is there any way to play my windows media files? also, are there any divX codecs for linux? i also want to know how to play my mpeg's, avi's, and wmv's

ok, enough of the long winded-ness. i just want to know where i can get the files (im not fond of synaptic. id rather grab and install them manually.)

a)

sudo apt-get install mplayer
wget http://www1.mplayerhq.hu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/essential-20060611.tar.bz2
tar -xjf essential-20060611.tar.bz2
sudo mkdir /usr/lib/codecs
sudo cp essential-20060611/* /usr/lib/codecs/
* not tested, i may have made mistakes *

b)

Get EasyUbuntu - http://easyubuntu.freecontrib.org/

and then open your files with MPlayer Movie Player.

If you are on 64 bit then install the 32 bit version of mplayer and then use this How To:

The RestrictedFormats should get you to where you want to be. I also suggest installing the VideoLan client (vlc) player. It works with most codecs and I think it has pretty decent divx support.
