what's my architecture?

Asked by Daniel Brumbaugh-Keeney

I'm pretty sure I have an i386 architecture. It's a standard personal computer about a year old, originally with Windows XP preinstalled.

However, uname -m reports i686, and I've seen some of my programs report i486.
Is something wrong?
What does this really mean?

What CPU you have? If its Pentium 2+ (which it ought to be if it is just one year old) then its i686.
