New computer to me with Xunbuntu, I have no log on name nor password. help?

Asked by Terry

Just purchased a Dell Latitude C400 with Xubuntu. The owner does not remember the log on name nor the password. I tried the hitting escape until Grub menu appears, to enter a new passwrod. THe window I get shows Ububtu, Kernel 2.6.17-11 generic (recovery mode). If I choose this the next request is 'root@monkey:~#'. I do not know any thing of Ubuntu nor to sign on. I can not reload any OS due to no CD or floppy. Is there a way to log on? Help?

Enter in recovery mode, in the prompt type:

"ls /home/" - This must give you a dir which probably is the user to login then,

"passwd <that user" - And change the password of that user.

Or simple add a new user to the System with:

"adduser <name_of_user>"

Have same problem as original question. Tried answer above but get no such file or directory when I enter Is/home or variations of that. When I type in adduser I get the answer Only one or two names allowed and then returns to root@ubuntu-c400:~# (the laptop is a Latitude c400).

Can you help with this problem?
