Ubuntu 7.10, Problem With Random Freezes

I keep getting random freezes using Ubuntu 7.10. I have been scouring the questions from people with the same problem. I've had several buffer I/O errors. I've looked in the system logs, but really I don't know what to look for, since I have only been using Linux Ubuntu for a short time. I've rn Memterst and scan my hardrive. My system: ASUS M2V motherboard, AMD64 X2 5200, Mushkin 2 X 1G in dual mode, Geforce 8500 GT, WD 80G SATA hard drive. I have a dual boot system and XP works fine. I'm using a restricted driver, XLG, for my 8500 GT. I'm not sure about the APIC, but I think it was enabled by default upon installation, with the option of choosing NOAPIC. What does that do anyway? I think it has something to do with suspend in a low power state? If so It doesn't seem to be working correctly. I see a lot of issues with Ubuntu freezing when checking the forum, but I don't know exactly how to go about troubleshooting this problem. Any help in resolving this freezing issue would be greatly appreciated. Here is a copy of var/log/Xorg.0.log. and system log.

Oh well, I didn't get any response, but I think I may have solved the problem. I was sharing a partitioned hard drive with XP, so I installed a fresh SATA hard drive and installed Ubuntu only. I now no longer have a dual boot system and have not had anymore random freezes. I'm not sure exactly what the problem was. Was it because of running dual boot with XP? Was the hard drive bad? WinXP ran fine, but Ubuntu would randomly freeze. The hard drive did not turn up any errors when scanned. Maybe something in the Ubuntu file system was corrupt? Since I still don't know why I was having random freezes in Ubuntu, I will leave this open for any response.

I spoke too soon, I still have problems with random freezes. If this is the way it is going to be, I will have to give up on trying to run Linux, unless somebody out there can help me.

I don't know if this is any possible help bu I have been running 7.10 with a dual AMD64 for a while and have had the same problems. I had no problems with 7.04, but with 7.10 it began. I had a high speed USB device (external hard drive) that I disconnected and it seems to have resolved the problem.

System log seemed to indicate something was going on with the USB.

I'm a novice myself, but thought this might help.

Have the same problem with UBUNTU 7.10. after the installation i get a random freezes and dont know what cause this problems. the earlist version never freez. So i give up and start working with OpenSuse.

Hopefully someone can solve the problem and then i can back to ubuntu.
