I have no idea about in Australia, but System76 in my home state of Colorado is doing a pretty good job. I don't know about international shipping and such but you might give them a look. There are quite a few other companies out there but I have no experience with them. I do know two members of our local team have computers from System76 and seem to enjoy them.

Thanks Jim. I went to their web site and they only sell to the US. If you know any other sites especially in Australia that would be great or even if you know how to search for same in Google. I get so much unrelated stuff when I do. Dell will not sell a laptop with Ubuntu installed down here and state: you can install it your self (talk about state the obvious) but you still have to pay for windows. Dell has since been crossed off my list :)

You can check https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesLaptops for hardware support on Ubuntu,
some overview about free software specs https://wiki.ubuntu.com/FreeSoftwareLaptop and a external "made up" list

Thanks for all the help but I would still like a reply from anyone living or working in Melbourne who know a specific store I can go to to buy a Laptop and know all hardware is compatible. I put Ubuntu on my desktop and it does not recognise my TV card. Don't want the same problem when I buy a laptop.

I've read about several people who bought a Dell and then didn't accept the windows EULA and got a refund for windows from Dell. It's a hassle but it sends the message to Dell that people want computers without windows.

As for buying something locally, I'd suggest looking for a business that sells custom computers and just buy one from them without windows. I did that from a business here in Colorado. Of course I had to install Ubuntu myself.

There are also a few sites listed here that are in Australia http://tuxmobil.org/reseller.html

I wonder if System76 would ship if you contacted them directly. Maybe there are export laws prohibiting it. If not, it might be worth a try. Two of our loco team members bought them and really like them.
