If you have a Ubuntu station and want to have an MSSQL Server you still need a Windows for it, because I don't think you can run it on wine...

My recommendation is VMware...

Why would you want to run a MSSQL on Linux?
Is it specifically the MSSQL you need or any SQL server?

MSSQL is designed to be run on Windows and that is what it should do. If you need "any" SQL server then there is great and some even better SQL server for Linux/Unix like MySQL, PostgreSQL ... Oracle, depending what you need it for.
If you must have both Linux and MSSQL servers and only have one great machine for it, then run it on VMware, you will still need a Windows Server for the SQL server. And that is going to cost you.

Costs:
MSSQL - lots
WS2003 - lots
Dev tool (VS2005) - lots

Linux - free (depends witch)
PostgreSQL - some small amount
Dev tool - mostly free

As you can see I'm not that good with economy. But this is about how it is.

I didn't want to start a new thread so I'll ask my question here:

I have ubuntu 10.04 desktop installed, working as a server for some small stuff(mostly file exchanging via public FTP)

I have invoicing software that needs MS SQL to work and I want to use this machine to store its databases. Do you think there is another solution to my problem other than virtual machine?
