French, German, Spanish and Portuguese characters

Asked by Sherief

In Windows, I used to combine, say, for example, alt+252 to yield the character "ü", alt+233 to yield the character "é".. however, I didn't find that works in Linux Ubuntu.. I find difficulties to enter these characters in a document. What should I have to overcome this problem?

Normally one would configure a "compose" key, so if you want to type é, for example, it could be set to the combination <compose> + e + '.

If you run unity, be aware that you may not be able to use the right "super" (windows) key.
