Font Manager in Gnome?

Asked by TheOnlyJoey

Hello,

Are there plans to build in a good gui interfaced Font manager for ubuntu?
This is something i really miss and my mother (yes she also started to use ubuntu cause of the ease of use) complains about not having a good interface (i have to do everything by hand).

Would be nice having a Mac OSX like font manager. that really works well

Maybe a good function for hoary?
Thank You
Joey

Take a look at GNOME Specimen

You can install it via the package "gnome-specimen".

Hmm... years later and not much has changed on this front. :-(

Anyone interested can try:

http://code.google.com/p/font-manager/

which is based on the script linked to in the previous post.

But, please keep in mind that this is a new application and may not be ready for prime time.

The KDE desktop has it in system settings.
Is anyone able to port it to gnome?

@ Laszlo

Sorry, I don't use KDE very often. What functionality is missing from Font Manager that's present in the KDE one you mention?

Please file an issue on the homepage detailing what needs to be done to bring it up to equal functionality. I would very much appreciate it. :-)

I'm not interested in competing with something like FontMatrix but I am very much interested in at least matching the default abilities of the KDE version.

The only thing I won't consider adding is the ability to manage fonts system-wide, but this shouldn't be an issue for users since the application allows specifying different folders to scan for fonts. So a system administrator can make a shared folder that all users can point the application to.

Can you help with this problem?
