my cd drive will not work on my acer aspire 4810t with gnome 2.30.2

Asked by melanie

i have an acer aspire 4810t on which i am using gnome 2.30.2. after the windows vista crashed completely. When i put a disc in it sounds as if it is loading but nothing happens. When i look at the disc utility under cd/dvd drive it says there is no media detected and the SMART status(whatever that is) says not supported. I havent been able to find anything so far to even try and would greatly appreciate some help getting my disc drive running normally again

SMART status is a drive health checking thing mainly for hard drives rather than optical drives, so it wouldn't be supported on that. Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Normally inserting a CD should pop up the nautilus file manager, or rhythmbox or banshee if it is a music CD

Can you help with this problem?
