What is the box which opens when I type?

When I click the Unity desktop and start typing, my text appears in a box in the lower right corner. I press <enter> and nothing happens. What is this box?

That box is a search box, it searchs for items in the current folder.

That's not it. I hit enter and nothing happens. This isn't in any window, it's just on the interface of the desktop.

Yes. It is a search box, even if there is no window. When you press enter, nothing is expected to happen. You can try to search something in the desktop, it will highlight.
