Wireless Network Authentication repeated requests

Asked by chrisrob

My computer used to remember the password for my home wireless router but not any more.

BUT not only does it ask me to enter it to authenticate the connection, which it then does, it repeatedly pops up to ask again and again. If I cancel any of the requests or close the window, it disconnects me!

Hello Chrisrob,
What type of authentication are you using? This sounds like you are using the incorrect password for your wireless encryption. Are you able to change your password from the access point/router to something new and test using that new password in your wifi setting?

You may also want to check keyrings, maybe it's not saving the password

I'm obviously using the correct password (which is fixed and printed on the router) as it connects when I enter it - even though it's set to automatically connect, which it used to do.
But, even though it's connected, it will frequently pop up the window requesting authentication again. I cannot ignore it (even though it is still connected) as the window stays on top of whatever I'm trying to do. If I cancel it, it disconnects me so I have to continually re-enter it. It's done it 5 times while I've tried to type this reply!

Can you please confirm your Ubuntu version?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CheckingYourUbuntuVersion

Can you also please open terminal and provide the output of the following command
nm-tool && lsb_release -a && lspci | grep Network

Have you tested deleting the Wireless connection from the network manager and adding it back?

Have you tested clicking on the Network icon in the top right hand corner, clicking on Edit Connections and deleting all Wifi connections and then adding your connection back?

Have you looked in the Passwords and encryption keys /keychain/keyring tool to see if your wireless password entrys are listed there and deleted them? You can get there by opening dash and searching for Password.

Have you tested installing wicd from the ubuntu software center to see if this issue occurs in that network manager also?

Thanks for all your help and suggestions.

I have looked at passwords and it's not listed. I have removed connections and added.

I have installed wicd.

It may be OK as it hasn't asked for password key again yet. If it does, I may go for a re-install. It's my no.2 machine which had had Windows 7 on it. When I changed to Ubuntu (removing Windows & reformatting first), I was delighted on how much faster it was.

Cheers

Chris
