How do I install Ubuntu Linux 64-bit PC on my Powerbook G3 Mac?

Asked by hello

I have a Powerbook G3 Macintosh laptop (black-colored) and I inserted a Ubuntu Linux 64-bit CD and the instructions on the CD package say that I should just open the Ubuntu folder and click on Install. However, I don't have that on the Ubuntu folder. I only have a bunch of documents and folders. One of the folders is named "install," but it only contains documents. What should I do? I thought it would work, but it doesn't. It gives me stress.

Put the cd in the drive and reboot your computer. If your computer is set up normally it will boot from the CD and from there you will have the option to load the live enviroment and install ubuntu. If it doesnt boot from the disk just reply here.

Does a G3 support a 64bit OS? I don't use Macs but I thought only the newer ones with the Core 2 duo were 64 bit. In order to boot a mac from the CD you have to hold down a key during startup. It might be the C key but I'm not sure.

Maybe. It would depend on the hardware of the G3. If it has an Intel processor then the answer is probably. If it has the PPC processor then you will need to find a version of Ubuntu for the PPC. I think the G3 was still PPC but not sure. I don't know if they are releasing PPC versions anymore. I didn't look so I can't be sure. Ubuntu used to come out in 3 flavors - PPC, .x86 32 bit and 64 bit. They may have dropped the PPC version. If so, you will need to find an older version that was release for the PPC.
