Enabling ATI Capabilities

I have an ATI Radeon X1900 and my computer is running Ubuntu 7.10 but I am struggling to get the ATI card functioning. What is the recommended way to enable it. Baring in mind I have searched through forums and tried most of the methods suggested within and how this may have effect on anything suggested here. I think the best way forward is if someone can tell me the recommended way and then I can report back any problems I have. Rather than list the numerous ways I've tried and the problems I have encountered.
