user switching failes having a black screen

Hellow

I have Ubuntu 7.10 - the Gutsy Gibbon installed (i386)

my architecture is intel Pentium D (EMT64) Dual-core.

When trying to switch users either from the fast or usual controls the current user get to be log-off,
 but the login screen never appaers having a black screen that waits forever.

I previously had (installed) Ubuntu 7.04 for AMD64 which never had this issue.

is this a common issue? (i never found similar issue in the forum)

Are you using the restricted ATI drivers as this looks like a repeat of question #5572 which was caused by the interaction between the drivers and xserver. In that case replacing the ATI driver with Vesa should solve the problem for the time being.
