I wonder if X is having issues with your display or graphics card. When you boot and it hangs with the blank screen and the white cursor. If you hit [ctrl]+[alt]+[F1] does it allow to you go to a console? You should be prompted with a screen to login.

If that doesn't work then it's another issue, probably hardware issue somewhere. I'm just trying to help you determine what the issue is because it sounds like an X issue. If you are able to get to a virtual console by hitting ctrl+alt+F1 you just need to reconfigure X for your specific video card. There is great documentation about this at wiki.ubuntu.com
