how to become a package maintainer

Asked by Daniel Brumbaugh-Keeney

There's been a lot of talk lately on the official ruby-talk mailing list about how debian and ubuntu package ruby stuff (ruby interpreter, rubygems, ri, rdoc, basics of ruby developing). There have been a number of complaints and claims that debian doesn't "get" ruby. Basically, I was wondering if it would be possible for a ruby programmer such as myself (I'm sure several qualified people would volunteer if I announced it on the mailing list) could be involved in the packaging process. Thank you.

Personally, I'm not aware of any person or group that does specific ruby packaging (there could be, I simply don't know).
We do have a quite active packaging community, which everyone is free to join. The portal is here:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU

You can join us in freenode, channel #ubuntu-motu, perhaps there is somebody there who can help you on the ruby specifics.
