Installation instructions and finding lost stuff.

Asked by Jim Gonzales

1. I need simple, step by step, installation instructions for a variety of files. e.g. .tar.gz, gzip, rpms, bin, xpi. I have been trying to install Gutsey, RealPlayer and several others to no avail. The book says click here and it will install. I click but nothing happens. Could it be that I have some internal problems?
2. The task bar at the bottom of the screen has vanished. One day I turned the computer on and it wasn't there. What do I do to get it back?

1. What software do you need to install? What's Gutsey? And you can install a lot of common softwares like RealPlayer and etc easily just by visiting and following Ubuntu Guide @ http://www.ubuntuguide.org

A simple walkthrough, however.

Packages of .tar.gz and .gzip type need to be extracted first and then the instructions in their content (README or INSTALL) needs to be followed stepwise.

RPMs aren't meant to be used on Ubuntu, they are native to Fedora and SUSE mostly. But in case you do need to install them you must first get alien (Type - sudo apt-get install alien - in the Terminal) and then run the command - sudo alien -c filename.rpm - In the same Terminal like last step.

BINs can be directly executed by typing the command - ./filename.bin - Again in the Terminal.

XPIs are native to Mozilla products I believe, and thus would require you to drag and drop them onto the Addons Manager in Firefox/Thunderbird or such.

2. Right click the top panel and choose "New Panel" and then customize it just like you want it to be.
