Asked by barazi

hi, i am a new linux/ubuntu user.... i´ve been reading about the difference between the difference between ubuntu 7.10 and ubuntu studio 7.10
the studio seems to have a ¨low latency kernel¨.. i wanna know what does that mean and what difference does it make?
and if ubuntu 7.10 is already installed on my device can i upgrade to to studio 7.10 and how?and will it give me any better performance regarding 3d applications ( maya or blender )
thanx

Without entering into a lot of technical details, a lowlatency kernel will be snappier, ie. it will respond faster to external events (for instance user commands or process requests).

You can easily upgrade to Ubuntu Studio by following these directions:

also ubuntustudio 7.10 uses the kernetl-rt and no longer uses lowlatency. The different kernel is particularly useful for audio processing apps where if some samples are missed it causes artifacts in the sound. If you are not using audio apps you can upgrade standard gutsy install to ubuntu studio without the audio packages. That is to say the do the atp-get as suggested in the link but don't add linux-rt, ubuntustudio-audio-plugins and ubuntustudio-audio. as far as losing features/support, the answer is no since ubuntustudio is just a flavour of ubuntu.
