Install XP from within Ubuntu/Grub

Asked by ourmaninparis

Hi,

I've got a bit of a wierd question. My sister's machine crashed due to a bad hard disk. I changed the hard disk and was intending to install Windows XP but the computer wouldn't boot from the CD (non-emulated boot message) and the machine has no floppy drive. I therefore installed Ubuntu and she is very happy except that she can't use her new Ipod with Itunes (I've tried everything wine+itunes, amarok, etc. nothing works correctly). Hence I'm now back to how to install Windows XP. I was wondering whether I could boot from the XP installation CD from within Ubuntu or Grub. Any ideas?

PS. I'm not super techy and have only been using Ubuntu myself for a few weeks (but love it!!!!)

Thanks

Hello ourmaninparis,

maybe you should give VirtualBox a try. You can install it via Applications->Install and Remove Applications.
It provides a virtual machine where XP can be run from(I recommend 512MB RAM, at least).

As for myself, I don't have an ipod so I don't know if your sisters' one will work within VirtualBox.

If you want to use foss (free and open source) software, you may take a look to gtkpod and rhythmbox.

Thomas - Thanks for your suggestion. I'd come to a similar conclusion myself and was looking at VMWare. I think I'll give VirtualBox a try though as it is already available in Ubuntu.

Andrea - thanks for the advice but I've already tried these without success. The only one that came close to working for me with a V6 ipod was Amarok but I couldn't see the music on the iPOD.
