Icons USB dont appear any longer

Hi all,
Using Ubuntu 7.10.
Every time I plug my USB pen and my Zipdrive in, I can no longer see any icons on screen.
If I open Partition Editor I can mount them but still no icons.

This stopped working last night after I formated 10 100mb Zipdiscs.

Now and then the USB pen might or might not be seen on screen, but only if I am lucky.

My USB Kodak C330 camera is seen and fully works, but no USB pens or USB Zipdrive can be seen.

Ok sorted.
I had a USB external fitted to my tower case and the lead from that internel going to another USB card was faulty.
