Ubuntu crashes with HP Simple Save

Asked by iolar

I recently downloaded Ubuntu 11.10. I plugged in my HP Simple Save backup hardrive, everything was fine. Selected the drive to safely remove it from the system, got a message that i could safely remove the Simple Save then computer crashed. I could not move the mouse I couldn't even turn off the computer, the power button was frozen. I have never heard of a crash that locks out the power button. Had to remove the battery on my computer (Samsung R580 laptop) in order to clear. Was able to boot up and also able to recreate the freeze. Help please. I am completely new to Ubuntu so talk newbie. Thanks in advance.

Can you provide the following info, it may give some clues. Open a terminal either from the program launcher, or using Ctrl+Alt+T.

Before plugging in the drive, run these commands by cutting and pasting them into the terminal window:

uname -a
lsb_release -a
lsusb

then after plugging in the drive run these commands:
lsusb
dmesg | tail -n 30

Can you post the output of all of these commands back here. Can you also confirm that this happens every time? Or only some times?

Hi,

Sorry, can you re-run those commands -- I forgot to instruct you to press enter after pasting the commands. Each command should be "lsusb", not "lsusblsusb"

Thanks

You should raise a bug, as it doesn't seem to be a PC administrative issue.

Can you help with this problem?

Provide an answer of your own, or ask iolar for more information if necessary.
