Hello Merlin,
first, have you the right Ubuntu version?
You need the 64 bit version. You get it by clicking the following link:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

And on this page choose the relevant options. The option for 64 bit is under the topic:

"What type of computer do you have?"

Choose your location and download the image. Afterward burn the CD and try again.

Please post the result.

Try to add some command line options (F6) before booting. Start with 'noapic', another one is 'all_generic_ide'.

Hello Merlin,
what T. Spindler does mean, is, that you should try some kernel parameter.
With F6, on start screen, you get the actually command line. I do something like that this way:

1.) delete quiet and splash ( because I want see something)
2.) add ignore_loglevel and debug_locks_verbose=1
3.) play with ACPI parameters: acpi=off or pci=noacpi etc.

A more detailed list of available parameters is in /usr/share/doc/linux-doc-`uname -r`/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt.gz (if you have installed the linux-doc package) or if installed the linux source, under Documentation. I assume that you have an older version installed, if not, you can get the file kernel-parameters.txt here -> http://lxr.linux.no/source/Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt?v=2.6.22 .

Have you tried a older version? If yes which one and were there problems too?

Please post the result.
