New Ubuntu Gutsy install, alsamixer missing pkg

Asked by Rita

Fresh install of Gutsy on Dell XPS 600, no sound. Apparently there is no Ubuntu driver for Soundblaster XFi, but even onboard card in not offering sound, have verified it is loading and tried command to install alsautils, but package not found, so cannot run alsamixer. Isn't this supposed to be included in the Ubuntu install?

Alsa-project website is apparently down, but wanted to find out if I am missing something about the Ubuntu install, whether or not it includes alsamixer...strictly for the purposes of at least running the onboard card (intel x08 chipset)

Thanks.

so I guess my onboard card is Firewire? Anyway, this really sucks not being able to figure this out. Yes, new, but surely someone can send me in the right direction for a fix. Have tried many suggestions off the boards/forums and other fixes, to no avail.

Your ALSA information is located at http://pastebin.ca/782015

Sorry about that duplication. Wanted to be sure you have the right info.

Thanks again.

alsa does not recognize anything more than the SB Xfi. enter the following command to see if the other card is at least detected by linux

sudo lshw -C multimedia

What is your processor (enter the following command "cat /proc/cpuinfo" if you don't know) ?

because there are drivers for your card if you are using a 64bit version of linux

I guess through our other gyrations we have managed to get all of the Alsa packages installed, but now we need the driver for the SB XFi card, is that what you mean? Otherwise it doesn't seem to want to believe there is any other sort of onboard card. Quite frankly, we just want to stop living the life of sign language! Your help much appreciated!

I have located the beta driver released by Creative Labs for the X-fi card, released in Sep. 2007; we may give this a shot. We're not stupid, just not knowledgable about this particular thing.

I checked out the known issues and it does not appear to have any conflicts with what we have going now. Fingers crossed and we will see if my son can download this and get it to run the card on our own.

If you do have any other suggestions, please continue to post.

Many thanks,

R
