According to the http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility/Atheros#AtherosAR5007EG you shouldn't have problems getting your wifi up and running.
Try the following how-to for Gutsy: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=554531.
For Feisty try http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=512828&page=23.

Cheers.

the strangest of things....after a reboot the wireless is not functioning.

I change wlan0 properties: clear and retype my WPA network password, then click OK, wait while it "changes interface configuration" then I close..and sometimes it starts working?

consistently, after a reboot I need to select the right SSID and type the WPA password and then the wireless functions great....is there any way for ubuntu to "save" this config ?

Nice to hear that you're almost there. To automatize the process you should use wpa_supplicant and a interfaces file: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/WPAHowTo#head-0ea8cdec8956fd98e68d5c887976b6bc331d95cb

Can you help with this problem?
