(Gutsy) Desktop effects refuse to work when turned on.

Asked by tuddy

Whenever I try to activate the desktop effects in Ubuntu Gutsy, I am always told that the "composite extension is not available", and am sent back to the desktop settings menu. Anybody know what is going wrong? I have an ATI Radeon Xpress graphics card, and all ATI Catalyst Drivers installed.

ATI at the moment do not support the system used to create desktop effects, you can either try and use a different system (called XGL, generally not favored) or wait for the next version of ubuntu as ati should have produced drivers that support the system ubuntu uses.

to try and get xgl running you can follow this:

ah, thanks very much, Gord. I'll try XGL, just because it MIGHT solve my problem.
