I have been having problems with ubuntu 7.10 freezing up on me whenever I go into to view the screensaver options. Whenever I select the ant spotlight screensaver, the system freezes up with no mouse or keyboard functionality. The only fix is to power down and restart my system. I have also had this happen while using the swiftweasel browser. I ran edgy and fiesty just fine without this type of issue, but this one has me stumped. Has anyone else experienced freezing issues with gutsy? And if so, Is there a fix?

I am having a similar problem. I am also using gutsy which I recently upgraded to. I have my screen saver set to start up after 10 minutes of inactivity. Coming back to may computer after a half hour or so I found the screen frozen with broad stripes down it. The mouse would not work. I tried <cntrl><alt><backspace> to restart the desktop but it did not work. The only way was to foraceably power down. I changed my power stetting to never turn off the computer nor the monitor. It ran fine for 12 hours but later the same thing happened. I have my graphics on the mother board, SiS Real256E.

Is there a way to get back to a terminal screen?

Hi eycks,

I found a solution to stop gutsy from freezing up on me. Go to system> administration> synaptic package manager> enter your password> click search button> type in compiz in search field> click search> click on compiz> click mark for removal> apply> apply Once compiz is removed, type in screensaver in search field. follow same steps for removal of screensaver as you did for compiz. After screensaver is removed, enter compiz once again in the search field. click on compiz and mark it for installation and reinstall compiz. I know that this means that there are no longer have any screensavers installed, but It is a sacrifice that I am willing to make to have a more stable system. Hopefully the Ubuntu crew will come out with a patch for this in the near future so we can enjoy all the features without system freezes.

As far as your terminal screen, Click on applications> accessories> terminal and you're there :)

"As far as your terminal screen, Click on applications> accessories> terminal and you're there :)" only works if your mouse works. I have the case of a blank screen without mouse or keyboard access.

Right now I have my screen saver set to a blank screen. If my system does not lock up overnight I will get rid of the screen savers as you suggested. Thanks

Before I remove compiz, remove screensaver, and re install compiz what will I be using for a desktop after I remove compiz? I am new to this so maybe the Gnome desktop will still be there. In any case what part of the desktop / display is Compiz?

I also had a problem with Ubuntu Update 8.04. The update window kept saying it needed to update 3 files. This was after my PC froze while doing an update and I rebooted. I found the following on the web but I suggest you do a little research before you use this.
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
I was supposed to find a bad file at this point but I did not. I just did the next step recommended
sudo apt-get upgrade ( what doing it twice does I don't know)
sudo apt-get check ( make sure everything is there)
