Install problem

Asked by mosc

Hi..

I am new to Linux and trying to install it on a Compaq PC from around 99. The problem that I am having is....I downloaded the new Ubuntu disc image from the site and burned an image of it using Nereo. When I turn on the Compaq with the disc in the boot drive, it seems to work and goes to the Ubunto main menu page that gives you the install options. I then select "start or install ubuntu", it loads the Linux kernal, then an ubuntu progress bar, and then proceeds to go to somthing that looks like the ubuntu platform. It then sits there for over an hour not really doing a thing, but seems to be making small progress...although there is nothing that gives you any info on install types. Originally when I tried to install it, i got the message "bios fails cutoff 2000 (1999), or somthing like that, although i seemed to fix that by installing a bios updadte.

Anyways, what I basically want to do is load ubuntu into this system and wipe out the old Windows ME OS. Any help with this would be Awesome!!!

Thanks in advance...

Xubuntu may be better suited for your computer. It is a lightweight version of ubuntu. If you still want to install ubuntu then try Alternate install CD because live CD needs 512MB memory which may not be present on your machine. Even if it is liveCD will run very slow. Alternate CD uses a text based installer and has better hardware support.

Can you help with this problem?
