Firewall necessity, more depth

Asked by vlade5394

Regarding the necessity of a firewall for an Ubuntu system, I understand one is not necessary "unless you want to start opening ports you should still be okay unless the apps you are using have security flaws."

Could someone elaborate on the times one will be necessary? Specifically, what applications open ports or are there apps that have security flaws (unlike apps like firefox which is patched and updated quickly).

Thank you

Mostly server applications like web servers (apache, thttpd etc) , or ftp servers (vsftpd vs), ssh server, telnet server. Basically anything that listens to connection request coming from outside the computer.
