Install sucessful, but booting into command line?

Asked by pbouwhuizen

Noob here...

I installed 6.06.1 LTS onto my Compaq Persario laptop successfully.
When botted up the first time it stays in command line.
I can input my login and PW, but do not know where to go from there.
(There being "username@ubuntu :~$")
I reinstalled the OS and am still getting the same "feature".

I have installed Ubuntu successfully on a different laptop without this problem.

My question: Is there a problem with the install. Or am I doing something wrong?

It sounds like the GUI isn't playing nicely with your hardware.

First question, is it 6.06 'server'? The server flavour doesn't have a gui included.

Next, you can try entering the command
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

to try and restart the login manager. This may result in an error message, or you may be in the GUI (unlikely). Post back the error message (or the part of it that looks like it's not working right) here.

Also, if that resulted in an error, you can try:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

to re-configure the GUI hardware. This will be in a text-based menu configuration screen, and all options are usually defaulted to a useful value -- if you don't know what it's asking it's usually safe to just click next.

Any specific reason you are not using 7.10? There have been many improvements since 6.06, including additional hardware support.

That works for now... I will take your advice and look into 7.10.
Thanks
