ubuntu cd fails to boot properly

Asked by Lukasavage

Hi,

I'm running an HP Presario with a FAT hard drive converted to NTFS and 750 MB RAM. XP Pro works without a hitch, but when I try to boot from the Ubuntu 7.10 cd there are some failures in the boot list after I enter from the "Start or Install Ubuntu" option, and the desktop image is almost totaly blurred out. Then I have to hard quit to shut down the computer.

What kind of failes are there on the boot list?

What graphics card do you have?

Hopefully Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron will solve this for you...

Fred,

I cannot answer the first question because the page scrolls faster than I can read it, but to answer your second question, if a graphics card is the same thing as a display adapter, then it is a RADEON IGP 345M. Also, I would just add that physically, the disk is good. I ran the integrity test on it, but in addition to the blurred desktop image, the image also vibrates very fast.

Yes, graphics card and display adapter is the same thing.

You have an integrated ATI RadeOn IGP 345M graphics chipset.
ATI graphics chipset works in Linux, but many have experienced that Nvidia works better.
ATI drivers are improving lately though..

The blurred desktop image that vibrates very fast indicates that there is some trouble with the device drivers or some setting or compatibility between the graphics adapter and and the screen.

You should file a bug report, I believe.

If you press Ctrl+Alt+F2 you will be put into terminal mode. (Ctrl+Alt+F7 brings you back to graphics mode).
From the terminal mode, its probably possible to install device drivers or manually configure the Xorg.conf file (which is located in /etc/X11/Xorg.conf) to make it work.

Fred,

Thanks for your help, but at this point this is becoming more problematic than it's worth to me, however you may be interested to know that "wubi" installs this thing better, though still too problematically for me to bother with.

I understand.

I am pretty new to Ubuntu too, and I've had a couple of problems myself. Some stuff inUbuntu are pretty awesome (like Compiz), some stuff could be better.

Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron is coming in April 2008. Be sure to check back then! :)
