Connecting to a Windows DFS Share

Asked by cmcelhatton

I am attempting to locate shares on a Windows Server setup with DFS enabled. The current problem is that share creation windows that come up (BTW I am using Ubuntu 7.10) requires a server name to be entered and this is no longer the case with a DFS setup, you are given a link of the form "company.domain\data_area" and under normal circumstance on let's say an Win XP setup this would be sufficient to locate the share and create the necessary shortcut.

Entering the new DFS link does not allow you to create the share, am I missing on something, is there another way to establish these share? So far I have not found anything other than using another method using something called CIFS. I am not a highly technical person and this command-based routine is not something I am comfortable with...any suggestions / help would be most appreciated.

Thanks for the question.

There is a package call smb4k that is basically a gui for smbfs and cifs mounts. You can add this package with your package manager of choice (if you need to can get guidance at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingSoftware)

The home page for smb4k is http://smb4k.berlios.de/ . You can also find documentation how to use it there.

Hope this helps

I have the same question, and this reply doesn't seem to solve it.
If there is a DFS created in Windows Server \\DomanName\Share, how can it be open from Linux client?
AFAIK, I can open only smb://ServerName/Share/.
Is there any way or DFS client in Linux to open \\DomanName\Share?

Can you help with this problem?
