HDD Preparation & Drivers

Asked by coljohnhannibalsmith

I have an Acer 5102WLMi Notebook and wish to install Ubuntu x64 on its own drive. I assume I will need to Partition & Format the HDD as I would in a Windows system. How do I do this? I purchased a 160GB Seagate Momentus for this purpose and Seagate doesn't offer and explanation for how to do this.

I also need to install Drivers for several pieces of hardware that don't appear to have Drivers available on the CD. These are:

**Broadcom WiFi Card.

**ENE CB 712/714/810 “5-in-1” Memory Card Reader

**Sony Ericson GC89 Wireless EDGE/GPRS Modem.

The installation CD mentions something about a Driver Update CD; but I certainly don't have it and the website makes no mention of it.

Thanks, John

I have a separate HDD for my Laptop that I intend to install only Ubuntu on, so the drive will only have one partition.

Thanks, John

The partitioning and formatting is a step in installation process. You don't need any additional programs. There are also some presets to select.

Marcobra,

Thanks for all your help. I'm just wrapping up this ticket.

I've finally gotten the Broadcom working.

I've called Sierra Wireless and their Aircard 875 will fully support Ubuntu (AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile).

My "ENE CB 712/714/810 “5-in-1” Memory Card Reader" would not work in Feisty but worked immediately with the native drivers in Gutsy. All I need now is to figure out how to Format the card in Ubuntu.3

Thanks, John
